British winters are rarely extreme, but they are damp, windy and changeable. The right coat keeps you warm and comfortable without hiding your outfit. Here is what to look for.
1. Start with your day
Think about where you spend most of your time outdoors. Short walks between the car, the train and the office call for a smart tailored coat that looks polished over workwear. Long walks, school runs and waiting at the bus stop call for something warmer, such as a padded jacket with a hood.
2. Dress for the temperature
- Mild and dry, around 10–14°C: a tailored coat over a light knit is enough.
- Cold and crisp, around 3–9°C: choose a lined coat and add a scarf.
- Close to freezing: a padded jacket with a high collar or hood keeps the warmth in.
- Windy days: a longer length and a collar you can close make the biggest difference.
3. Length matters
Cropped and hip-length styles look great with high-waisted jeans and trousers. Mid-length and long coats are warmer and work beautifully over dresses and skirts.
4. The details that make a difference
- A hood or high collar against the wind
- A lining that keeps the warmth in
- Deep pockets for cold hands, your phone and your keys
- A belt or tailored cut that keeps your shape
5. Fit for layering
Try your coat on over a knit, because that is how you will wear it most of the winter. If you are between sizes, choose the larger one. Every product page has a size chart in centimetres and inches to help you decide.
