What to Wear in Changeable British Weather

Sunshine in the morning, a shower at lunch and a cold wind on the way home. British weather changes quickly, so the easiest way to stay comfortable is to dress in layers you can add or remove during the day.

Start with three layers

  • Base layer: a soft long-sleeve top or fine knit that sits close to the body.
  • Middle layer: a chunky knit or cardigan. This is where most of the warmth comes from.
  • Outer layer: your coat or jacket, which blocks the wind and ties the outfit together.

Air trapped between layers insulates better than one thick layer. When you warm up indoors, simply take one layer off.

On a rainy day

Choose a coat with a hood or carry a compact umbrella. Darker colours hide splashes better, and ankle boots keep your feet dry. Avoid long hems that can drag on wet pavements.

On a windy day

Wind makes it feel much colder than the temperature suggests. Pick a coat with a high collar, close it fully and add a scarf to protect your neck. A belt or fitted waist stops cold air getting in.

On a cold, dry day

This is the moment for a longer coat over a warm knit. Add gloves and a scarf, and you will stay comfortable even when you are standing still.

On a mild day

Keep the layers light: a fine knit under a tailored coat that you can wear open. If the sun comes out, you will not overheat.

A simple rule

Check the forecast for the whole day, not just the morning, and dress for the coldest part of it. It is always easier to take a layer off than to wish you had brought one.
